Mariehamn, Aland Islands

Woke up to wall to wall sunshine! In a beautiful port. Looking out on quaint houses, green trees, and a small band playing folk music. Delightful. Set off at 8 a.m. on our tour of Historical Maritime, Aland. Had a lovely drive through the countryside to a farm owned by a ship owner. We were hosted by the granddaughter of the original owner who gave us a quick history of the place and then let us loose to explore. From there we visited a church that was built in the 1200s. Our guide was married there. He was easy on the eyes and very laid back. Next we visited a windjammer sailing ship anchored right next to ours. It was fascinating. Watched a film of the recollections of some of the men who had sailed on her on her annual voyage to Australia and around Cape Horn. There was footage of the men sailing in a gale with huge waves sweeping over the decks. I took a picture of the "staircases" they used to scramble up the rigging so they wouldn't get washed overboard. Absolutely terrifying. We stayed on the ship exploring every inch of her as we could walk back to the ship at our leisure.
We got back in time for a quick bite where we sat with a couple from California. Her husband and I listened as Kaye and Norma connected over mutual interests in horses and Roy Rogers. The town is so pretty and there is such easy access to it, that we decided to allocate 1.5 hours for a walk and some birding. Met Kaye again on our walk. We have time for a nap before we go to have dinner with the Captain!
